In recent years, platforms like Airbnb and VRBO have become popular for travelers seeking unique, home-like accommodations. But as a travel advisor committed to delivering the best possible experiences for my clients, I make a conscious choice not to book these types of accommodations. Here’s why:

1. Quality Control and Consistency

When I book a hotel, resort, or other professional accommodation, I know that the property has been vetted to meet industry standards for cleanliness, safety, and comfort. Hotels and resorts are required to meet specific health and safety regulations, especially when it comes to sanitation, which is particularly important post-pandemic. In contrast, short-term rentals like Airbnbs or VRBOs vary significantly in quality, cleanliness, and upkeep.

Each Airbnb or VRBO listing is managed by an individual owner (or even a large corporation), and the experience can range widely even within the same city or neighborhood. Without the ability to guarantee consistency and quality, it’s harder to ensure my clients have a safe, enjoyable, and seamless experience.

2. Lack of Customer Support and Accountability

Hotels and resorts typically offer 24/7 customer support, with a dedicated staff available to resolve any issues that may arise. If something goes wrong with a hotel booking, I have contacts within the hotel’s management and can quickly assist in finding a solution, whether that’s a room upgrade, relocation, or a quick fix to any inconvenience.

With short-term rental platforms, there is no on-site support. If my clients experience an issue—such as not receiving the key code, finding the property in poor condition, or encountering safety concerns—it’s more challenging to resolve on the spot. And while Airbnb and VRBO offer customer service, these platforms may take hours or even days to respond, which could leave my clients in a frustrating, uncomfortable situation.

3. Hidden Fees and Unpredictable Costs

Short-term rentals often come with various additional fees: cleaning fees, service charges, pet fees, and sometimes even “community fees.” These costs can add up quickly, and the final price is often higher than initially expected. With traditional accommodations, the pricing is usually more transparent and includes most of the amenities my clients will need, from housekeeping to Wi-Fi, breakfast, or shuttle services.

Additionally, hotels and resorts often offer perks such as loyalty programs, complimentary breakfast, free parking, and other amenities that add value to the booking. With short-term rentals, these perks are seldom available, making it more difficult to add extra value to my clients’ travel experience.

4. Safety and Security Concerns

As a travel advisor, my top priority is the safety of my clients. Hotels and resorts are typically equipped with security measures, like key card access, CCTV, front desk personnel, and clear emergency protocols. On the other hand, short-term rentals are not held to the same security standards. If a host fails to install or update locks, smoke detectors, or other essential safety measures, it can put travelers at risk.

In addition, shared entryways, unfamiliar neighborhoods, and lack of security staff can sometimes pose safety concerns for travelers. By sticking to professional accommodations, I can be more confident in the safety and security of the stay, which allows my clients to focus on enjoying their trip.

5. Local Restrictions and Legal Issues

Many popular tourist destinations now have strict regulations on short-term rentals, with some cities banning them outright or enforcing stringent limits. By booking traditional accommodations, I can ensure that my clients stay compliant with local laws and avoid potential disruptions, such as sudden cancellations if a city imposes or enforces new regulations.

6. A Seamless, Stress-Free Experience

One of the main reasons clients choose to work with a travel advisor is to reduce the stress of planning. When booking a hotel or resort, I know I’m setting my clients up for a smooth, stress-free stay. They can arrive, check-in, and immediately relax without navigating the potential pitfalls of a short-term rental. With hotels, there’s no need to worry about cleaning up before leaving, handling a self-check-in process, or keeping track of strict “house rules.”

Ultimately, as a travel advisor, my goal is to provide my clients with a worry-free, enjoyable experience. By choosing professional accommodations, I can confidently deliver on that promise every time!
